The Communion of Saints

Dr. Adrian Smith

Back in February, I had the great privilege of visiting the Veteran’s Victory House, and spending time with our Christian brother, Harry Mills, during his regular visit with Sunny. I had not met Mr. Harry before that visit; so, as I was driving to the Veteran’s Victory House, I prayed that the Holy Spirit would enable Harry, Sunny, and myself to experience “the communion of saints.” My prayer was answered in abundance! In conversation with Mr. Harry, I immediately sensed that I was with a brother who ‘practiced the presence’ of the living God. I sensed a sweet, serene spirit in Mr. Harry. We spoke about his favorite psalm (Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd,” which he had memorized). I learnt that Mr. Harry used to begin the day by singing the prayerful hymn, “Open my Eyes, That I May See,” which includes the beautiful words, “Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine.” When the time for the visit was over, I did not want to leave—I had been so blessed by spending time with Mr. Harry.

The Apostles’ Creed includes these affirmations: “I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic (universal) church; the communion of saints.” I think the order of these affirmations is significant. The Holy Spirit indwells the universal church, and the Holy Spirit produces the communion of saints. That was what I experienced during my visit with Mr. Harry. Another hymn (“The Church’s One Foundation”) includes the following affirmation about the church: “She on earth has union, with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion, with those whose rest is won.” Mr. Harry’s rest is won. Let us support our dear sister Sunny with prayer before the throne of grace.

YOUNG LIFE OF
WEST ASHLEY
Each Monday evening in the Family Life Center @ 6:00
West Ashley YoungLife

Their Mission:
Introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith.
Working with the local church is important to Young Life:
Although congregations can minister in ways we can’t, Young Life has inroads in communities with kids who are disinterested in church. However, as Young Life staff and leaders care for these kids, we try to help them become lifelong followers of Jesus Christ who will one day be active in the life of a local church.
